CAA Says Telephone Scam Still a Problem for Shops
©2009 by CollisionWeek.
The California Autobody Association (CAA) is warning its member shops that a scam involving TTD/TTY telephone calls to shops are still being made and could pose a problem.
The calls come in using the TTD/TTY translation service designed for callers who cannot use a telephone normally due to speech or hearing limitations.
According to CAA, the calls are in regards to a vehicle in state or out-of-state that has been in a collision. There is usually no insurance on the claim and customer would be paying out of pocket. The person on the other end of the TTD/TTY translation wants the shop to clear the towing charges against the vehicle and have it moved to your shop.
According to the CAA, some of the indicators that this might be a scam are the descriptions of the damage which doesn't sound normal or the caller not giving the exact location of the vehicle. In addition, the caller may not give names, may sound like they are reading from a script, or ask the shop to do something out of the ordinary.
